Chanel unveils all new Première Flying Tourbillon limited-edition watches

Categories:Jewelry & Watches

When it comes to listing the best luxury watches in recent years, Chanel’s Première Flying Tourbillon is certain to find a spot in the top few. The exquisite timepiece that was once voted as the best ladies watch at the 2012 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève will now be presented to watch enthusiasts in an all new form. While the 2013 edition saw the watches in a dazzling blue and pink sapphire embellishment, the Parisian marque now brings five new variants to the Flying Tourbillon series, all of which promise to spell-bind you with their opulence.

Each of the new models feature a case set with 47 baguette-cut diamonds and a bezel set with 42 baguette-cut diamonds and 52 brilliant-cut diamonds. A successful outcome of the collaboration between Chanel and the Renaud et Papi Swiss master watchmakers, the tourbillon is powered by the manual-winding mechanical movement “Camellia Flying Tourbillon Calibre” and offers a 40-hour power reserve with a 21’600 vph vibration. Further, the watch’s gold cabochon carries its own dose of bling with a set of 19 brilliant-cut diamonds.
As part of the new series, Chanel will present two editions of 20 pieces in a beige or white gold case that come with a white dial and a matching white alligator strap. A third version of 20 pieces comes in a beige gold case set on a black ceramic dial, which is further complemented with a black alligator strap. Tourbillon’s next variant is a 12 piece edition in a luxe white gold case, a black ceramic dial and a white gold bracelet set that is emblazoned with a sparkling cluster of 536 diamonds. However, the last and personally the best in the series is the Première Flying Tourbillon Openwork, done in beige gold in a black satin strap, which will also be presented in a limited edition of 12 pieces. With the horological world singing praises for the tourbillon, a piece from its new edition is just what your collection needs!

Jaquet Droz reveals richly detailed paillonné enameled watches

Categories:Jewelry & Watches

Jaquet Droz’s decorative streak has resulted in some truly awe inspiring objects, now the watchmaker has created a series of timepieces that boast intricacy and subtle detail brought to life through the technique of paillonné enameling. The 18th century technique involves positioning ultra-thin sheets of gold (by hand!) one by one to form geometric patterns on the colored enamel base. A translucent coating of enamel sets the gold in place.

Pierre Jaquet-Droz was himself skilled in these art forms and today, the master craftsmen at Jaquet Droz have brought the technique back to life with a limited edition collection of watches with fresh new designs. Red gold meets jewel tones enamel to give the watches a regal look.
The Grande Seconde comes in blue, violet and anthracite gray and feature 18 carat red gold 43 mm cases. These are powered by the self-winding mechanical movement Jaquet Droz 2663.P, which is complete with a silicon balance spring and pallet horns, double barrel and an 18-carat red gold oscillating weight. They offer a power reserve of 68 hours and are limited to 8 pieces in each color.
The Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute 39 mm Paillonné is also available in violet, blue and grey. Their 39 mm red gold cases contain the Jaquet Droz 2653.P, self-winding mechanical movement with a 68 hours of power reserve. These are also limited to 8 pieces in every color.
The Jaquet Droz Pocket Watch Paillonné is available in vivid red and blue with red gold cases held on a gold chain. Inside the 50mm case is the hand-wound mechanical movement Jaquet Droz 2615 with a 40 hour power reserve. These are limited to 8 pieces in each shade.
The Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute 35 mm Paillonné is a previously unseen version of the Petite Heure Minute. This special edition is available only in blue and is powered by the Jaquet Droz 2653.P self-winding mechanical movement, with a silicon balance spring and pallet horns, double barrel, and 18-carat red gold oscillating weight.
The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Paillonné rounds up the series. Boasting a 7 day power reserve, this watch has been created in the paillonné style for the first time. The 43 mm case contains the Jaquet Droz 25JD, self-winding tourbillon movement. The tourbillon features a blue dial, blued hands, and a lapis lazuli oscillating weight. Only 8 pieces have been created.

Hermès reveals gorgeous Faubourg Manchette Joaillerie watches at Baselworld

This year’s Faubourg Manchette Joaillerie watches combine that signature broad leather cuff with gem-studded bezels and precious stone dials. At first the leather craftsman assembles the cuff strap using the saddle-stitching technique, making three double stitches at each end of the seam before rubbing down the sharp edges and pressing a furrow between the seam and the edge of the leather. The strap contour is dyed and then heat-smoothed with a soldering iron, in an operation known as burnishing. To finish, it is waterproofed with beeswax.

Next, the watch case’s hollowed out bezel is fitted with 36 precisely cut baguette set gems, color coordinated to the color of the strap. Green straps twinkle with emeralds while blue and brown straps get sapphires in matching hues. The classic black strap gets clear, crystalline diamonds. Even the dials are made from precious gems, green malachite, blue lapis lazuli, amber tiger’s eye and black onyx are each set with four diamonds at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 indices. The colored variants feature rose gold cases and pin buckles while the black one uses white gold.

Piaget (2)
Celebrated watchmaker Piaget is proudly showcasing two beautiful artisan techniques in their SIHH 2016 watches. The brand has used the techniques of wood/mother-of-pearl & wood marquetry as well as gold engraving to create incredibly intricate and beautiful Yves Piaget roses on the dials of their ultra-thin Altiplano watches.

Altiplano 38mm dial in wood marquetry
Wood marquetry involves the carving out of wood in order to inlay it with other materials and was common in the 17th and 18th centuries during the Louis XIV and Louis XV style periods. Artisan Rose Saneuil chose the materials of pale pink bird’s-eye maple, light red and pink sycamore and white mother-of-pearl to create the stunning wood marquetry pieces in this collection.
Altiplano 38mm dial in white mother-of-pearl & wood marquetry
The long and delicate process selecting materials to achieve the desired color shades, “labelling” each of the 96 elements so they could be assembled and inlaid within a 32 mm diameter dial. Applying one petal at a time Saneuil was working with hundredth of a millimeter precision to create the beautiful and unique dials.
Altiplano 38mm engraved gold dial
Created by artisan Dick Steenman, this engraved gold dial also pays tribute to the Yves Piaget rose. After using a scriber to outline the petals Steenman sculpted each petal with surgical precision before sanding and smoothing out the surface. The final step was to accentuate the angles and reinforce the folds to perfect the sense of depth and thickness. The entire process takes about 30 hours.
