It seems almost unfair to call Alessandro Michele's work at Gucci just fashion collections. In his relatively short stint at the brand, Michele has created an entire aesthetic universe that somehow feels both brand new and like it's how Gucci has looked forever, and for Cruise 2017, that world has expanded once again.
The show, which took place at London's Westminster Abbey late last week, included 96 full looks and covered both the women's and men's collections, although the show's emphasis was on womenswear. Most of the models also carried bags, which are the brand's consumer bread and butter, and fans of the brand's existing lines will likely flock to the new pieces as well.
Most notably, Michele expanded his use of the brand's iconic curved bamboo handles for Cruise, which helps tie Gucci's future to its storied past. There were also new top handle shapes in multicolor snakeskin, as well as new embroidery motifs, most notable on oversized hobos. Check out the runway collection below.

If there's a brand you should be paying close attention to right now, it's Gucci. Alessandro Michele has been bringing new life to the company with collections that continue to impress critics and shoppers alike, if the brand's record sales are any indication. A couple weeks ago in New York City, Gucci previewed its Fall/Winter 2016 accessories for select members of the press, and we have a look at what's to come.
Gucci Fall/Winter 2016 takes a bit more of an artistic edge, offering painted GG logo print bags, continuing the Bee theme and expanding on the handbag and shoe offerings. Alessandro Michele asked New York street artist and musician Trouble Andrew to spray-paint the Gucci “G” for a print which can be seen on a few of the bags. Colorful renditions of the Sylvie bag, along with bamboo top-handled bags, gave off the "Renaissance Biker" and "80s Italian and French Couture" vibe Michele spoke of.
This collection pulls from many of Michele's favorite things: art, music and multiple historical eras. For embellished designs, these bags may be just what you're looking for, but of course there will be plenty of simpler options offered when the entire Fall/Winter 2016 collection hits stores. It's hard to believe that Alessandro Michele has only been the creative director at Gucci for about a year and a half. Almost immediately, Michele transformed the brand into one of the buzziest companies in fashion; his first full collection was so successful that Gucci didn't even need to have a sale at the end of the season. Things at the brand have been humming along beautifully ever since, and the latest evidence of that is Gucci's gone-in-a-flash capsule collection for Net-a-Porter.
The 18-piece exclusive line debuted on Net-a-Porter's site Monday and included ready-to-wear, bags, shoes and small accessories in a gorgeous vintage floral that won't be available anywhere else (and that would probably look like your grandma's couch in a less capable designer's hands). At close of business Monday, ten of the pieces had fully sold out, including all the leather goods, and all the sized merchandise left was nearly gone.
There is some good news if you missed out, though: many of the pieces are marked with "more stock coming soon," so if you see something you like, we suggest heading over to the collection's page and adding your desired piece to your Net-a-Porter account's wish list. Doing so will give you the right of first refusal upon restock, which is the ideal position to be in when shopping a very limited-edition capsule collection from one of the world's hottest handbag brands.
